When the nerve of a tooth becomes diseased by infection or decay, or irreversibly inflamed, it will need to be removed from the root canal of the tooth. The canal is thoroughly disinfected and sealed with a special root-canal filling material, and the tooth is then restored to its function, usually with a crown.
